Young transhumanists as work-avoiders?
I wonder how the young transhumanists who show up at the various transhumanism-themed conferences throughout the year make their livings, considering that many of them seem not to have jobs. They must have the same requirements for food, lodging, utilities, etc. other Americans have, and traveling costs money as well. Yet they seem to have both the money and the leisure to pull it off somehow. A few of them even profess to have cryonics arrangements, an additional expense that I can't see how they pay for, given the public evidence of their lives.

For a few of them, this *is* (part of) their job, and their salary comes from Kurzweil, Thiel, or an H+ public charity.
ReplyDeleteAs for the others - I don't know this scene, but there are many possibilities. I.T. would be common. There might be a few students living off loans and grants. And there would be some people doing more down-to-earth jobs as well.
Anyway, I thought you could pay for your suspension by taking out life insurance?
@Mitchell:
ReplyDeleteThank you for your response. Most people I know have lost income and have had to cut back on their spending, myself included. I just find it odd that we see these transhumanists in their 20's who seem isolated from the economy the rest of us live in. If they came from rentier backgrounds, like, say, Barbara & Jenna or the Kardashian sisters, or if they had tenure as academicians, then their financial freedom would make sense.
